Chania is Crete’s former capital and is set on the north-western side of the Greek Island. Abundant in character and over-flowing with history, this town really does offer an amazing holiday.
Set against a backdrop of the magnificent White Mountains, the main town of Chania is alive with bustling leather markets, squares and restaurants. Some of the best shopping in Crete can be done here. However for a more intimate experience, head deeper into the Old Town where you’ll find an intricate maze of narrow, cobbled streets leading onto a beautiful harbour.
For those lazy summer days, Chania Beach lies just around the corner from the harbour, providing a stretch of sand where you can top up your tan. However holidays to Chania aren’t predominantly for sun-worshippers. Many buses run from the town centre to lots of other beach resorts along the coast such as Georgioupolis and Aghia Marina, which have quieter, more secluded beaches.
Accommodation in Chania can vary from apartment complexes to traditional Cretan town houses. They can be in the ‘New Town’ or in the Venetian Old Town, on the beach or on the harbour.
Whether you’re coming to Chania for the cosmopolitan vibe or to admire the fantastic array of architecture, you won’t be disappointed. Chania Harbour boasts a beautiful Turkish Mosque, a pretty Venetian lighthouse and many Byzantine churches, along with the Maritime and Archaeological Museums.
The winding cobbled streets and the harbour front both offer quaint little cafes and gorgeous restaurants. You can unwind and enjoy both laid-back family meals and more upmarket candle-lit dinners for two while watching the sun set behind the lighthouse.
If you think Chania’s purely for culture-lovers, think again. Bars and clubs are dotted around the harbour and will entertain you all night long. The restaurants and bars when lit up create a magical glow that glistens across the water so strolling along the water front makes for an extremely relaxing evening. For a livelier night out though, take a bus or a taxi ride to nearby Platanias, a party-goers heaven.
