Georgioupolis is a beautiful fishing village on the north coast of Crete just a 30 minute transfer journey from Chania Airport.
Overlooked by pine-clad mountains and with the River Almyros flowing gently through, it’s a great setting for an authentic Cretan holiday. Small local fishing boats drift lazily up and down the river, bringing in freshly caught fish to serve in delicious dishes in the restaurants and tavernas along the beach.
The beach here is the longest in Crete. At 9km long, the glorious golden sandy beach provides an amazing base for a typical hot and sunny beach holiday. The main stretch of beach is lined with sun beds and water sports offering hours of relaxation or entertainment. However if you’d prefer to get away from the crowds and unwind in peace, a sweeping bay the other side of the river hosts a tranquil spot and crystal clear waters, perfect for snorkelling.
Georgioupolis is home to a pretty harbour, where markets are regularly held and an array of traditional tavernas and cafes are situated. Holidaymakers spend their days relaxing by a hotel pool or on the beach, with intermittent breaks for a cool drink or tasty snack.
Situated between the bustling town of Chania and the cosmopolitan town of Rethymnon, Georgioupolis is a great base for exploring other places. Why not take a bus into Chania and spend a relaxing day wandering through the cobbled streets of the Old Town or spend an evening in a harbour-side restaurant in Rethymnon.
Another day trip is nearby Lake Kournas, a spectacular lake set in the mountains and home to olive groves and small pebble beaches. Many locals spend their time here, and in such a beautiful setting, it’s easy to see why. Swim in the cool blue waters, venture out on a pedalo or canoe or just unwind in a lakeside tavern – whichever you choose it’s a great day out for families or couples alike.
