Crete, Mediterranean Sea. Greece.
Sitting in the Mediterranean Sea, Crete is well-known for being the oldest, largest and most southerly of all the Greek Islands.
The climate here is hot during the main summer months of June, July and August, often reaching around 35 degrees Celsius! May and September offer milder weather, yet are still warm enough to lounge around on the beach or by a pool.
Two airports serve the island; Chania Airport in the west and Heraklion Airport in the east. Flights from all major UK airports can be taken throughout the week, making it easily accessible as a fantastic holiday destination.
If you’re an avid adventurer, enthusiastic historian, lively party-goer or just a laid-back sun worshipper, Crete is the place for you. With ancient Minoan monuments, majestic mountain ranges, beautiful secluded beaches and cosmopolitan towns; Crete is definitely the most varied of all the Greek Islands.
When visiting Crete, the best way to ensure you see all that’s on offer is by hiring a car. Buses are also available from most of the bigger towns if you prefer to completely immerse yourself in Cretan life.
The west of Crete is where you’ll uncover the majority of the authentic Greek villages and lifestyles. The former capital of Crete, Chania, boasts a charismatic old town complete with narrow cobbled streets, ancient Venetian architecture and a picturesque harbour. Meanwhile the enchanting fishing village of Georgioupolis is home to a stunning sandy beach sweeping around a bay complete with tranquil blue waters and a peaceful harbour.
If you’re searching for a more active, vibrant holiday, head to the east side of the island, home to the sophisticated Aghios Nikolaos which provides a base for the perfect family holiday. Offering water sports on the beach, relaxing cafes around a ‘bottomless’ lake and excellent nightlife, it has something for everyone. However, for a group of youngsters on the hunt for a hot climate and thriving nightlife, Malia on the north-east coast is abundant in bars and clubs pumping all night long.
Whilst in Crete do not miss a trip to the magical ancient Minoan Palace of Knossos on the north coast. Still standing at 3,500 years old, this monument allows even the least knowledgeable historian to be in awe of an empire that once ruled Crete. Alternatively, in the heart of the western side of Crete, the magnificent Samaria Gorge is a spectacular 16km long gorge filled with breath-taking views and intricate walking trails.
