Argostoli is Kefalonia’s capital, located on the west coast just a 30 minute transfer journey from Kefalonia International Airport. It’s a cosmopolitan town, with lots to offer such as shops, restaurants and bars.
A tree lined promenade graces the waterfront, where relaxing hours can be spent strolling along, occasionally popping into a cosy taverna or an atmospheric bar. Being a fishing town with a harbour, local fisherman sell fresh fish right on the waterfront in the bustling daily fish market.
The town has a main square and a main street, abundant in chic boutiques and trinket shops. The best shopping on the island can be done here, but don’t expect top of the range fashion, as Kefalonia still remains a typically Greek island. The majority of the bars and nightlife is also centred around the main square, and being the hub of activity it tends to get quite busy in the summer months.
Although Argostoli isn’t flooded in history, some Greek culture can be admired from such places as the Natural History Museum and the Folk Museum. You can also take a trip to the old bell tower, where spectacular views across the town can be enjoyed.
Argostoli is separated from the mainland by a beautiful blue lagoon, joined only by the Drapano Bridge. For day trips out, take a bus or hire a car to such resorts as Lassi, Fiskardo and Skala.
Being a working port, yachts, tour boats and ferries constantly drift in and out of the harbour. Many boat trips are available, so take a trip on a glass-bottomed boat and explore the underwater world.
Holidays to Argostoli don’t offer a beach; however you can take the short trip to neighbouring Lassi, where a glorious golden stretch of sandy beach sweeps around five bays, offering plentiful sunbathing space.
