Untouched by tourism, Lourdas is a quiet, laid-back town just a 30 minute transfer from Kefalonia International Airport on the south coast of the island.
Holidays in Lourdas are mainly centred around the fabulous 3 mile long sand and shingle beach. Plentiful sun beds and parasols are dotted along the beach, providing a fantastic base for those long, lazy summer days. Lay back with a good book, splash around with the kids or take a refreshing swim in the crystal clear Ionian Sea.
If you fancy something a bit more energetic, an array of water sports is available on Lourdas beach, such as jet-skiing, water-skiing and wind surfing.
The village of Lourdas is situated up on the hillside; so this resort isn’t great for those with difficulties walking. If you’re on the beach though, there’s no need to walk up the hill every time you need a drink or a tasty snack! A few beach bars and tavernas line the back of the beach, perfect for a spot of lunch.
A main square provides a pretty setting for candlelit meals and quiet drinks and during the days provides ample shops to pick up basic amenities. For a more varied shopping experience however, take the 15 minute journey to Kefalonia’s capital, Argostoli. Argostoli also offers a livelier night time atmosphere, great if you want to stay in a peaceful location but have the option to enjoy a few nights out elsewhere.
While in Lourdas you can also experience tremendous views of the magnificent Mount Aenos, lying inland on the south of the island. Another spectacular view is of Zante, another of the Greek islands, directly south across the Ionian Sea. Be sure to have your camera at the ready, as sunsets on the horizon are stunning here!
Whether you’re on a family holiday or a couples’ holiday, you won’t want to miss a trip to the mystical Drogarati Caves or the gorgeous Melissani Cave and Lake, a short journey north. Close by; visit the Sission Monastery to indulge in a bit of Greek culture.
