On the southern most tip of Kefalonia lies the fantastic beach resort of Skala. At around a 1 hour 30 minute transfer from the airport, it’s the perfect destination for an all-round Greek Island holiday.
The beaches here are what it’s all about. A huge stretch of glorious golden sand fronts this resort, so be ready for long hot days spent relaxing on the beach. Prop up your parasol and while away the days. There are secluded beaches here too if you prefer an isolated spot to yourself. Pretty bays and rocky coves are beautiful escapes, and can be found scattered along the coast.
Away from the beach and up a slight hill, the main town of Skala boasts souvenir shops, mini-markets, restaurants, tavernas and bars. All the usual suspects like sun creams and postcards can be picked up here, but for a proper shopping trip visit Argostoli on the west coast.
There’s a huge choice of restaurants in Skala, ranging from international to traditional Greek cuisine. Make sure you try the local fish dishes, with fish and seafood being caught daily in and around the local area.
Skala has an atmospheric centre, and is neither too quiet nor too noisy. A few bars stay open late into the night, so if you do fancy an evening out after dinner then there’s always somewhere to go.
Although a purpose-built holiday resort, Skala still boasts to be a rural town, with a mountainous backdrop and an abundance of pine trees. With 4* hotels and apartment complexes dotted along the seafront, holidays to Skala are always fantastic.
Day trips anywhere in Kefalonia from Skala are easy. With a hire car, even the furthest north resorts such as Fiskardo and Assos are reachable. Take a trip to the famous Myrtos Beach, where scenes from ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandalin’ were filmed. Boat trips are also available, so why not go all the way to Zante and explore what’s on offer there!
