Main land Greece
Greece is a spectacular country filled with ancient history and majestic monuments. Located between the Aegean and Ionian Seas on the southern-most Balkan Peninsula, Greece boasts an eclectic mix of beautiful beaches, luscious green landscapes and charming white-washed villages.
With over 25 national and international airports serving the mainland and its islands, Greece is within easy reach from the UK. The biggest airports on the mainland are Athens and Thessaloniki, and serving the Peloponnese is Kalamata airport.
Greece is most famed for being the home-land of the gods, with temples and theatres leaving an insight into some 4,000 year old empire. History enthusiasts are in their element here, but the country also boasts exquisite beaches, secluded coves and fragrant citrus groves. With anything from bustling cities to sleepy villages, Greece has something to offer everyone, whatever your holiday style.
Athens
Athens, the vibrant capital of Greece, exudes a mythical aura. The incredibly famous Parthenon stands on the Acropolis, with Athens surrounding it in the foot-hills below. While here don’t miss a trip to museums and ancient ruins, providing you with the sense you’ve stepped back in time to the Golden Age. Besides all the history, Athens also offers great shopping, delicious cuisine and, perhaps surprisingly, a glorious beach.
The Peloponnese
Too often is the Peloponnese region of southern Greece missed and replaced by island holidays. The rugged coastlines and traditional Greek ways of life prevail here, so you’re likely to get a fantastic holiday away from big tourist resorts. Resorts in the Peloponnese include Nafplion, a stunning town thriving with neoclassical architecture and Tolon, a beautiful town situated around a charming bay.
Halkidiki
The rural three-fingered region of northern Greece is known as Halkidiki. With laid-back fishing villages and sparkling blue seas on offer, it’s a fantastic holiday destination for sun-lovers. The cosmopolitan city of Thessaloniki boasts a bustling, friendly atmosphere and is home to some glorious sandy beaches and sophisticated hotels. If you fancy a relaxing holiday to simply wind-down, stay in Sani where you can experience a Blue Flag awarded beach and a chic marina.
Other resorts on mainland Greece are Pelion, Porto Heli, Kalamata and Parga.
