Kalkan, a charming, laid-back town set on a steep hillside, overlooks an attractive harbour on the Mediterranean Sea.
Whether it’s wandering between small boutiques and cafes set among narrow, cobbled white washed streets or sitting on the pebbled beach taking in the beautiful views; they’ll make for relaxing days soaking up the Turkish sun. The cobbled streets and hillside location do mean, however, that this town isn’t particularly suited for those who have difficulty walking.
If you fancy something exciting, why not try one of the many water sports on offer from one of the ‘beach clubs’, such as water skiing and jet ski.
To end your days, simply unwind in one of the many restaurants on the seafront, followed by a cold drink in a bar overlooking the bay.
If you wish to visit other beaches, there is a minibus (dolmus) from Kalkan which takes you 15 minutes into Kaputas or 20 minutes into Patara. Both offer spectacular sandy beaches stretched along the impressive Dalaman coastline.
The sea surrounding Kalkan is highly regarded as the best scuba diving spot in Turkey, and indeed one of the best in the world. Not only is it thriving with exotic fish life, but it’s also dotted with enchanting underwater wrecks.
For those who are interested in exploring the surrounding area, Kalkan is the perfect starting point, with access to over 25 historic sites by car or by boat. Take a boat ride to Kekova Island, the ‘Sunken City’, to be entranced by the columns appearing from beneath the tranquil blue water. Or visit Simena Harbour, its fascinating Knights of St John Castle overlooking the village. The bustling fishing town of Fethiye offers a huge gold centre and attractive markets, about 85km from Kalkan.
Other nearby attractions are Tlos and Saklikent (approx 55km away) an old Lycian city with rock tombs, baths, and a Roman theatre set along Europe’s second longest canyon. Alternatively take a canoe down Xanthos River, indulging in a barbeque and amazing mud bath. Travelling slightly further afield, at 165km away, you can admire the ancient tombs and stunning Iztuzu beach from a cruise along the reed-bed in Dalyan.
